Hiring a car without a credit card can seem nearly impossible no matter where you are located in the world, even in one of the biggest airports in the UK… Manchester. Credit cards are the main form of accepted payment by car hire companies as it’s so easy to take payment, which is the exact reason many people don’t like using their credit cards as it can be so easy to get into debt. Due to this we decided that we needed to do something about it to help our customers out.

Unlike some other locations, there are very few restrictions on the type of debit card that can be used for the security deposit, visa (including electron and prepaid card), master card, maestro and all perfectly acceptable to cover the holding deposit, in fact there are a number of offers where there is no security deposit required on collection of the car, so hiring a car at Manchester Airport with a debit card really is easy.

We got on the phone to all the suppliers in the car rental village at Manchester airport and tried to organise a deal in regards to accepting a different payment method and eventually were successful in our efforts. The method they accepted for our customers to be allowed to use is debit card car hire however they gave us some restrictions in regards to which cards are accepted.

The restrictions

One of the restrictions is that the name on the card must match the name on the licence of the main driver. Arrived in Manchester Airport knowing that I could arrange payment etc by my laser card as I dont have a VISA card. Car was prefect very economical and so easy to drive. Only problem I had was that there was a few marks on the car and I would have liked when I went to the car that one of the staff checked it with me rather than me having to find a member of staff to alter the page showing where marks were etc on my return car was checked and signed so it was very seamless and I would go with them again.

Do I need to pass a credit check if using my debit card to hire?

If renting a car in the UK and you are a UK resident most of the large multinational suppliers will carry out an electronic address check to ensure you have strong enough links to the address provided. However most of the suppliers with the exception of 1 or 2, still carry out the same checks so not unique to when you need to hire via a debit card. Key indicator are if you are named on the Electoral Register and named on the council tax bill.

When renting a car overseas as an inbound client our suppliers do not carry out any checks.

Do I need to leave a deposit if hiring with a debit card?

Most suppliers do require a security deposit when renting a car, in the UK we have a range of options. The best value suppliers would request a £200.00 – £300.00 deposit. However we do have selected locations where our supplier does not require any deposit, so a full zero deposit.

In Europe we have options where you can just leave a fuel deposit of 110 EUR, and there is no mandatory requirement to take the Super Cover as this can be the case with some of the smaller budget suppliers.
