Personal number plates are a great addition to your pride and joy. Often expensive they sometimes appeal to drives as it adds your own personal touch to your vehicle which is nice but what lengths will people go to in order to acquire this personal touch? Prices vary massively however usually the more unique and low amount of digits it is the more expensive it can be. I have narrowed down the top 5 most expensive number plates ever sold.

#5 (VIP 1)
This number plate has been around the block and had a fair share of important owners. Originally meant for the popemobile in order for his visit to Ireland, Chelsea football owner Roman Abramovich quickly snapped it up from underneath the pope for a staggering £285,000!!

#4 (M1)
Mike McCoomb sold a string of mobile phone stores to cell net and BT which made him a rather wealthy man. His six year old son’s birthday was vastly approaching so he thought lets buy him the “M1” number plate as a gift. This gift for his young son cost a phenomenal £330,000!!

A wealthy Bradford Entrepreneur saw the number plate go on sale and immediately snapped it up in order to be suited onto his Mercedes SLR, he claims that the price to pay for the number plate was a great deal as its worth 10x that price! If that’s true the original buy cost him £440,000!! and with a bit of math he believe this plate is worth £4.4 million!

Talal Ali Mohammed Khoury broke the record at the time for the price of a single digit registration plate. Whilst in the same auction he also bought the number 55 for £800,000 and in an interview after claimed that the number 5 had “absolutely no significance to him”. So if 55 cost that much how much was the single 5? Less numbers cheaper right, not in this case the 5 plate cost him a mind blowing £3.5 Million!!

Because the price that the number 5 fetched it’s not really a surprise that number 1 is the most expensive number plate ever sold in history to date. Saeed Abdul Ghaffer Khouri son of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family smashed the old record claiming number 1 is “the best number” bought the plate for £7 Million!! doubling the old record.
