Photocard licences have been around for a while now, so long that we almost always keep them on hand. The transition from paper licence to card has been incredibly convenient for lots of drivers. What isn’t convenient however is the need to change your photo. Even if you are aware of the fact, it’s incredibly easy to forget if you have an expired photocard licence and your only reminder can get very easily lost in your letter box.
This can get even more complicated when it comes to renting a vehicle, with you undoubtedly having questions and concerns about if it is even possible. With Indigo you can rest assured we can clear it up and give you a good deal while we’re at it.
A simple enough question but important nonetheless. In the UK, your photo on your licence needs to be renewed every 10 years. You can do so either online or at the post office with a fee of £14 online or £21.50 at the post office. You can also post your licence and updated passport-style photo to the DVLA directly with a D1 pack form and a £17 fee. Getting your licence back can take between 1 and 3 weeks, if you want our advice, applying online is often the fastest and definitely cheapest.
It is worth noting that if you’re outside the UK the rules can vary, including when you need to renew your photo. For example, in France, it’s every 15 years!
Whilst it’s reasonable to think you need to just send a new photo off and get your new licence, it’s unfortunately not that simple. What you’ll need first and foremost is:
If you don’t have a passport, you won’t be able to apply online and will have to do so through post or the office.
It’s very easy to lose track of when your licence expires, especially after 10 years. For a good habit, it’s always good to check the expiry date on your photocard every so often and see how close the date is. Getting it renewed earlier may be more convenient (better safe than sorry). You can rest assured, however, that you do get a letter to inform you when the date is closing in, though if you have not updated your mail address it can go unnoticed.
It can be tricky but depending on the length of the expiration, we can offer a car hire with an expired photocard licence. It is important that you inform us beforehand so that we can arrange the details and see what suppliers we can work with.
We can still guarantee that you will get the best price possible, as well as our selection of services such as a senior driver car hire or a low deposit car hire.
Even after all this though, there may be some questions and concerns regarding what is possible. You may even be curious about when we have been able to help other customers.
